I would not consider the 45/70 a practical hunting rifle for Africa it's just an odd caliber for longer shots, and looses power quickly beyond 100 yards. I would much prefer a simple bolt rifle in the 416 caliber.If we take the 1770 fps of the 430 gr load in a 15 inch Encore 45/70 one would have to push the 360 gr 460 bullet slightly over 2100 fps to get the same momentum. Looking at my 2004 Hodgdon Annual Manual, the hottest loads for the 45-70 are slightly faster than the hottest loads for the 457 WWM, but not by much. The only real difference appears to be that the 457 WWM operates at lower pressures and is slightly longer.
